Catfish.

In today’s world many of us can feel alone, can feel unwanted and ultimately not ourselves, That thought is heartbreaking but there is a place of refuge for some people who feel like that. They can write a blog, they can make online accounts and post about what they love and they can go on chatrooms and talk to other people who feel what they feel and love what they love. But some people are so unhappy with their lives and unfortunately themselves that they take talking online chatting and meeting new people to a whole other extreme. I’m talking about Catfishing, this term is not that common but basically ‘catfish’ is someone who pretends to be someone they're not using Facebook or other social media to create false identities. This can range from one end of the scale to other. Catfishing is a real issue, it needs more attention these people, and both the catfish and the person being catfished need help.

Most of us have sat through assembly after assembly telling, always telling us about the danger of talking to a stranger online. Let’s face it most of us brush it off because we think ‘hey that can never happen to me’. But the thing is you think that until it actually happens to you, it’s more common than you think because it is so easy to do. Some of you may be familiar with the MTV show Catfish, (if you haven’t seen it I highly recommend it), as you can tell by the title it’s about catfishing. These two guys ; Neve and Max help people find out who people have really been talking to and then they try and help as much as they can.

It’s a basic human desire to be wanted, to be needed and to be loved. Without attachments we are simply living and going through the motions. People who catfish have never felt this; they have either been deprived or are depriving themselves of the basic need of attachment, the idea of forming a relationship with someone without ever having to see them, never having to worry about how you look and never having to give anything of yourself. To them nothing could be better; they manipulate innocent people to make themselves feel powerful, attractive and desired. They take and take, they take money, they take gifts and they take someone’s trust. It’s all imagination and a computer screen that’s enough to make them feel complete.

Catfishing can leave a disastrous aftermath; there have been cases where people have lost all their money. Some have even ended in a suicide or a murder. Because of catfishing both parties can have their whole lives messed up; it can ruin people emotionally, mentally and physically. The issue of catfishing HAS to be resolved, it is scarily easily to do and it is scarily easy to fall in the trap.

Catfishing is real and it can be a horrible experience, but with the right knowledge there are ways you can prevent it from happening to yourself, here are some ideas:

1)      Be cautious of random people

2)      Don’t give out personal details

3)      Use higher quality sites or chatrooms

4)      Don’t give them money, they will thinks it okay and keep asking

5)      Ask for proof

6)      Trust yourself and what your gut feeling is

7)      Don’t add people you haven’t met

8)      If they refuse to video chat, well that’s a massive red flag

9)      Get a second opinion on the situation

10)   BE AWARE

Life at its best isn’t easy in a way I guess you could say people who catfish, are just lost boys and girls and the internet is their neverland.

Internet Censorship

Many of us think of the internet as a never ending portal, a whole other galaxy, with endless places to go and explore. Unfortunately for some places this isn’t the case, internet censorship is a real thing. Now most of us have most likely never heard of internet censorship because we have never been exposed to this issue. Internet censorship is controlled or suppression of what can be viewed on the internet, it is usually carried out by governments and can go from one extreme to another.

Burma (Myanmar) a sovereign state in Southeast Asia has an internet censorship currently in place. This censorship stops people staying there from going on certain sites, these sites are ones that provide information on; religion, ethics, politics and morals. Up until August 2012 all publication like; newspaper articles, cartoons, advertisements and drawings required approval from the Press Scrutiny and Registration Division of the Ministry of Information.

Now this may seem like a dark and gloomy prospect, but like the majority of things it does have its advantages. These advantages would be; the preservation of national security, inappropriate content, reduction of scams, hate crimes, and of course one of the biggest issues in today’s world cyberbullying. When you hear internet censorship your mind immediately jumps to the idea of suppression, true this might be the case but sometimes it’s not. Internet censorship can be a good thing as long as it’s not taken to the extreme.

Internet censorship like many things can go to an extreme, to a point where it’s not about safety but about control. Disadvantages are; the limitation of ‘freedom of speech’, violation of basic human rights, limitation of society’s advancement and of course, the big cheese. Internet censorship can give governments too much power, too much control of what their people know and don’t know.

At the end of the day when all is said and done, anything can be a good thing if it’s in moderation and everything can be a bad thing if you have too much. Just like internet censorship its can be good or bad it all depends on the country, the type of government and the reasoning behind it.

The Simpsons are more than meets the 'yellow' eye.

The Simpsons are everyone’s favourite carton from doh to aye carumba; it’s hard to deny the fact that they are by far one of the greatest things on this very planet.  They may just appear as simply a comedy act but if you listen clearer and look deeper, you may start to notice that they have some hidden predictions. Over the years the Simpsons have successfully predicted many technological advancements, it seems to be that Mr Matt Groening is more than JUST the guy who created the Simpsons.

Now I’m sure we can all think back to the older seasons of the cartoon, the good old days as some of you might like to refer to it as. In the episode Lisa’s wedding, 1995, her fiancĂ© at the time made a phone call using his watch. Now not even 20 years later Samsung have just released their new Smartwatch. Also in this episode Lisa and Marge are video chatting from a phone.  Now what’s the Simpson family without Maggie, granted she never talks so no one can actually understand what she is trying to say. In the 1992 episode Homer’s brother Herb comes up with a crazy machine that helps mothers understand their baby when its crying. Now this was a little farfetched even for the Simpsons, but believe it or not a real cry translator hit the baby market in 2009. In a 1998 episode the Springfield Elementary children were intrigued with a yard work stimulator, Farmville anyone?

Ebola has been the top news subject for months now, as it should be. If you haven’t heard of it yet then clearly you have not been watching the news or keeping a close eye on your Facebook account. This dreadful breakout of Ebola could not have been predicted, well unless your part of the city of Springfield. In the 1997 episode entitled Lisa’s sax, Bart is home sick and Marge is looking after him. She brings up a book to read to him, the book is called Curious George and the Ebola Virus. Yes you read that right but wait there is a little bit more to it. After the book scene it pans out to a drawing by Bart, the drawing depicts a crying sun and a pile of dead bodies…spooky.

It appears to be the Simpsons are telling us more than jokes.

Google, The Face of the Future

Google, the most popular and most used search engine in the world. It is used by everyone except, those Bing users…

Google shaped the world and continues to do so day after day. A lot of people assume that google is JUST a search engine, that it’s JUST a programme. Well they are very far off; google has been coming up with ideas, creating things long before people started to notice. Google kept things quiet and now it’s ready to step into an even bigger spotlight. Let’s talk about some of the new and exciting inventions Google has in store for us.

Internet is quickly becoming man’s new best friend, and as much as we deny it we kind of do need it. We use it almost every day in some way. Sometimes you come across a funny cat video on YouTube and think to yourself, how do some people not have internet? (Don’t deny it I know you do.) Well it looks like google plans on changing that with its new project loon.  Project Loon is essentially a whole bunch of balloons being sent into space to connect homes to internet or phone signals. It had an experiment conducted in New Zealand and it actually proved to work so much so that the results are being used to ‘perfect’ the technology enough for public use. Now a giant balloon floating along in space does not sound like it would work, but the balloons are manoeuvred by changing the wind altitude on the balloon in question. The aim of this product is to deliver internet access to rural areas and to aid after natural disasters.

If that wasn’t sci-fi enough for you then wait until you see what’s next.

Now we all have seen iron man (well I sure hope you have). His suit is pretty awesome, especially how it keeps an eye on his health. It’s pretty useful. As it turns out google has a similar thing in mind with the invention of the new google contact lens.  The contact lens allows people with diabetes to be able to monitor their health levels. This is an amazing thing because the risk of not knowing is decreased by so much. This can save lives and it should be recognised.

All of these advancements from google, but where do they happen?

These things are made and designed in a place called GoogleX. I guess you could call it the Area 51 of technology.

Apple or PC?

Batman and The Joker, Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader, Mr Krab and Plankton. All iconic and equal rivals, they are all fiction unlike two of the most common rivals today; Apple and PC. With their similar technology, with them both having huge fanbases, with them both having a huge influence it’s going to be next to impossible for them not to compete against each other.

It’s getting more and more common for schools to use lots of technology. It just makes education easier and more interesting, nothing wrong with it. But the catch is which of two most popular brands of technology should be used in schools. Apple or PC?

Apple is so widely known for their technology and how it’s presented. From iPhone to iPads, iMacs to ipods. They took the world by storm. If Apple was introduced into school there are a lot of things that would prove to be useful, like apps. Apps can be powerful learning tool and cater to the needs of a wide variety of people. Media students could use iMovie for their work, music students can use igarage and it goes on and on. As a student it’s safe to say that carrying all those textbooks is very tiering and very straining. And it’s Apple to the rescue with its wonderful iBook feature. IBook allows you to have hundreds of books but not suffer the weight. Let’s face it that would be very handy and save lots of locker space. So far apple is sounding pretty right? It’s a shame nothing can be 100% perfect.

One of the problems is that they can get a bit complicated to use if you are doing heavy schoolwork. They can also be a bit finicky. A problem that arises is that you are unable to have more than one window open at a time. The fact that many school related applications may require adobe flash and unfortunately iPads don’t provide that can be annoying. All students would have experienced having to write painstakingly long essays. They take a long time and typing on a small keyboard, on a small device it’s very frustrating. So in that department iPad are not going to work.

The other option for schools is the golden olden PC. PC has proven over time to be reliable and consistent. They make typing those long essays so much easier. Researching these essays becomes instantly easier because you can have more than one window open at a time so it cuts down time. For teacher the use of PCs can make teaching the classroom more engaging for the students. Multimedia presentations are a lot more fun using PCs rather than the vintage style of posters. PCS have been used in school for a while now, and they prove to be liked and enjoyed by teachers and students alike.

Sometimes though PCs don’t live up to their reputation, they can really easily crash and brake. Battery life isn’t as advanced as iPads and it takes longer to charge. Storage of PCs can be frustrating whether it’s a computer lab or a laptop. Computer labs make seating of classrooms rigid and teaching is hard not to be one on one. With laptops its more flexible but carrying them in your bag leaves little space for textbooks. In the classroom the use of laptops can be off putting for teachers because it creates a wall between the student and the teacher.

PC and Apple both have pros and cons, both create different atmospheres for learning. The prices are pretty similar though! At the end of the day both are going to help learning in similar ways, it’s a matter of preference.

Facebook Messenger App Controversy

Facebook. Probably one of the most popular, well known and most used social networking site in the world. That little blue and white logo brings joy to many of its users from the games to the ability to talk to any of your friends all over the world. Facebook is always updating, always coming up with new ideas and we the users accept it, but recently the development of Facebooks new messenger app has sparked a massive controversy across the Facebook universe.

For those of you who don’t know the Facebook messenger app is an instant messaging service that allows you to message your Facebook friends quicker using this one app. Doesn’t sound so bad right? Why are people making such a fuss about it?

It’s not about the app itself but the privacy police it entails. People are being led to believe that Facebook messenger app has access to your camera, contacts and microphone without your knowledge. It’s a scary concept and is probably giving people lots of flashbacks to all those sci-fi movies. For most people giving technology that much power over you is quite frightening, and it makes you think that it’s going to take over and all the predictions of technology enslaving mankind are coming true. But the fact still remains could such a big company as Facebook really get away with taking photos of people sleeping? Or calling people without your knowledge?

The truth is that the privacy policy isn’t that much different than other popular sited like Snapchat or Instagram. Facebook needs access to your camera if you want to take a picture and send it; Facebook needs access to your microphone if you want to video call someone. The key word in the policy is PERMISSION. You are asked several times if you give the app permission to do all these things so it is completely up to you if you allow it or don’t allow it.

The app is causing a massive debate because a lot of people are jumping to conclusions. Both sides of the debate are not letting up, will Facebook listen?

EBay Hacking

EBay it’s a sight we all know and its users love, well that was until it got hacked.

When we sign up to sites like eBay we always assume it’s a safe site, up until recently that was the case with eBay. 145 million accounts had their personal data compromised. What happened was 3 computer hackers used the credentials of 3 cooperate executives to get into the user database. The hackers then managed to get a hold of millions of account details. Once they had the details they could view what the customer had looked at, bought or sold. It’s a terrible breech of privacy and one would have expected eBay and its large number of users to have a better security system.

The people affected by this hacking weren’t just the users of eBay but also the employees. EBay is in the firing line and with the various social media outlets it’s hardly something they can sweep under the rug.  Surprisingly though eBay remained to have a normal buy and sell rate as it did before the hack, but that doesn’t go to say that the users are not angry.

It was such a big deal because these hackers although they couldn’t do anything serious they still got into the database. Who knows what the next step could be, it could have gone a whole lot worse. The database was said to be safe and because of that users trusted it. Maybe that is an obvious sign that we shouldn’t be trusting technology with so much when it can be easily hacked by other people.

So a worldwide well known and popular company would have a lot of heat to face about this and they did. Users demanded to know what eBay was going to do about it; social media was overthrown with outraged eBay user’s posts, interview after interview. Following the attack eBay immediately urged users to change their passwords, and then they hired more security firms to make sure something like this could be avoided next time. Thankfully the company’s payment system –PayPal- was not harmed meaning that the hackers couldn’t buy anything using the hacked accounts.

In the future I think that eBay should have a stronger security system. When the site got hacked it would have been better to have automatically changed eBay user’s passwords for their eBay account, then immediately send a follow up email. Not everyone may have taken it seriously and doing that was is a guaranteed way to stop the hackers doing more damage.
